When he was twenty-one, he founded the Ajoblanco, literary review, which in sold one hundred thousand copies, and was one of the most influential publications of the time in the Hispanic world. Ernesto, a year old Chilean, flees his country after having disclosed a corruption scandal and sets up home in Berlin, where he gets by thanks to his relationship with the charming businessman Maksin Kazantev.
While Ernesto delves into the past of his Jewish grandmother, a victim of Nazi atrocities, he discovers that his family history bears no little resemblance to that of Kazantev, the son of a woman who experienced Stalinist extermination in Ukraine and the descendant of a European family worn out by the vicissitudes of the 20th century. Kazantev involves Ernesto in a hazardous game of counterespionage and opposing political forces in the wake of the break-up of the Soviet Union.
