Banyak perhatian telah diberikan pada masalah-masalah perencanaan dan pengendalian yang berkaitan dengan usaha-usaha penjualan. Biaya penjualan yang meningkat akhir-akhir ini telah mendorong kita untuk mencari cara-cara pemecahannya. Salah satu hambatan utama bagi pengembangan prosedur-prosedur perencanaan dan pengendalian penjualan adalah terbatasnya data yang bermanfaat yang dapat dipergunakan. Sebagai contoh, usaha-usaha penjualan akan lebih produktif bila wiraniaga salesman mendatangi kemungkinan-kemungkinan yang paling memberikan harapan, akan tetapi penyediaan informasi yang dapat mengidentifikasi pembeli-pembeli yang paling memberi harapan selalu sulit bagi manager penjualan. Tulisan ini mengajukan sebuah model yang akan memberikan data yang perlu bagi usaha-usaha perencanaan dan pengendalian penjualan.

T his article describes how the career movements of managers and professionals within organizations may be described by a Markov chain model. Markov chain may be used to examine the movement of personnel within the organization. After briefly reviewing and illustrating Markov chain, specific applications to human resource planning are suggested. Finally, this article identifies potential limitation of Markov chain model on their appropriateness and usefulness in human resource planning.
